Coconut
The coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) is known as the ‘Tree of Life’, mostly growing in India, Philippines, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka, Provides livelihood for large number of people all over the world (90 countries), High value commodity, act as a source of food security.
Coconut productivity is often affected by the drought, pest and diseases, Non availability of inputs, Lack of timely applications of fertilisers, Extreme reduction in Coconut immunity, tolerance, productivity and life span.
Generally, Coconut farms did not meet out the recommended doses of nutrients, Lack of irrigation facilities /adequate moisture, not assure the timely application of nutrients, unless caring of these measures, resulted the reduced nut size, number and yield, fetching lower market value.
It is high time to look after the healthiness coconut to save the livelihood of coconut farmers.
Importance of the project
In coconut production, Karnataka is one among the lead state in India, which produced 5177 million nuts in 64 lakh ha with the productivity of coconut 8569 nuts / ha. Though the production is higherthe productivity does not match with other state, particularly with Tamil Nadu which is produced 11413 nuts / ha with production of 5091 million nuts from 446 lakh ha. The major reasons / constrains / vital problems are pest and diseases incidence, monsoon failure and timely availability of inputs and fertilisers which leads to the reduction in the nut yield and quality fetching lower market value and poor income to the Karnataka coconut framers. Obviously, the first two reasons are naturally encountered by the all coconut growing states of India, whereas the third reason, ie., timely availability and application of required quantity of fertilisers/ nutrients must be the vital which decides the immunity and tolerance of the coconut trees to withstand against the attack of pest and diseases and monsoon failures.
The studies revealed that in India, majority of coconut growing states did not meet out the recommended doses nutrients, which resulted in a decrease in production productivity and quality. This is mainly due to failure of monsoon or lack of irrigation facilities does not provide adequate moisture in the tree basin for timely application of fertilisers/ nutrients.
Particularly in Karnataka state, coconut is the second largest and important horticultural crop besides major producer of ball copra in the country. Both big and small farmers are convert the coconut into ball copra particularly in Tumkur, Hassan, Chitradurga and Chikkamagalur districts needs frequent recharge of nutrients to the coconut trees in order to maintain the production, productivity and quality. Hence it is a high time,
Objective
